A European OEM of automated packaging machinery required a redesigned HMI control assembly. The original combination of mechanical pushbuttons and thin graphic overlay suffered from two core limitations: surface ink abrasion after 3–6 months of 2-shift operation, and inconsistent sealing against fine dust and minor liquid splashes within the production workshop.
The client required a fully custom interface, integrating tactile keys, a transparent display window and rigid back support. They contacted a professional membrane switch manufacturer to replace the old assembly, with strict environmental and dimensional tolerance requirements.
Our engineering team separated the design into acrylic faceplate and membrane switch assembly. The acrylic panel was processed via CNC cutting to achieve precise cutouts for the display and buttons. Matte hard coating was applied to resist abrasion from repeated glove contact and workshop chemical splashes.
The membrane switch adopted dual-layer PET conductive circuit, metal domes for tactile feedback. The full perimeter adhesive seal prevented dust ingress. All samples passed FAI (First Article Inspection), including contact resistance test ≤100 Ω, insulation resistance ≥100 MΩ at 250 VDC.
The pre-production sample was validated by the client’s engineering team. The acrylic panel maintained consistent surface hardness and dimensional accuracy across the pilot batch. The membrane switch kept stable tactile performance after cycle testing. The complete HMI assembly meets IP65 ingress protection under the defined workshop operating conditions.
This project demonstrates how integrated membrane switch, acrylic panel solutions can replace mechanical button interfaces for industrial automation equipment.
