Conventional mechanical buttons or potentiometers with moving parts have a limited operational lifetime and eventually wear out, compromising reliability. Capacitive touch technology offers superior durability due to the absence of moving parts. For high-stress applications, the surface material of the touch electrode is critical—glass or acrylic may be preferable to plastics. While metal can be used for isolated buttons, complete front covers require isolated sensor pads.

Traditional push buttons provide tactile feedback, which capacitive surfaces lack. This can be addressed through optical, acoustic, or vibration-based feedback systems.
